Quarterfinals, Week 9: Sideshow Mel vs. Lex Luthor

Round 2 has begun! To keep things interesting, we’ve implemented a few changes.

1) There is a different question to respond to in order to vote. This question will also be changed for the semifinal and final rounds.

2) Voting now ends at noon on Friday.

3) And so you know the judging is fair, our colleagues from other Ivy Plus (the Ivy League plus MIT and Stanford) alumni associations will be judging.

To vote, simply answer the following question:

Which person, if real, would make the best housemate—and why?

Cast your vote three ways:

  • Submit your answer in the comments of this post
  • Respond via the Cornell or MIT Facebook pages
  • Tweet using the hashtag #MITCU

This week’s judge: the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association. Twitter: @pennalumni.

As before, judges will be looking for posts that are clever, witty, absurd, and downright ridiculous. The more entertaining they find your comment to be, the more likely it will tip the scale in favor of your alma mater. Voting ends each Friday at noon ET.

Lex Luthor would definitely make the better housemate. Uh, he’s rich and can buy whatever we need!

Yeah, but he’s also a sociopath, which means he doesn’t care what you need. Sideshow Mel, on the other hand, is a comedian, which means he craves your approval.

Sideshow Mel’s job is to be funny, a task at which he has continuously succeeded since his introduction in 1990. Lex Luthor’s job is to kill Superman, a task at which he has continuously failed since his introduction in 1940.

Also: Sideshow Mel has a bone in his hair. Lex Luthor not only has no bone, he also has no hair. Advantage: Cornell.

Lex would clearly be the better choice. His home under Grand Central Station works for me, and his source of income, skimming the fractional pennies when a bank calculates interest, worked so well that the guys in “Office Space” copied it.

Personally, I’d be a little concerned with Lex’s history of sacrificing his “associates” for the better good of his plan. Everyone around him perishes while he manages to get away. I’ll take my chances with the children’s variety show sidekick.

  5. I should be the only psychotic evil genius in my room. Plus, Lex would throw away all my Superman comics. Vote for Sideshow Mel.
